VPS Hosting in 2026: Which VPS for Which Job

Prices read from vendor pagesHetzner before/after repricing tableChecked October 15, 2026Only Hostinger and Cloudways pay us

Checked October 15, 2026, US view, USD unless marked: Hetzner's CX23 is the cheapest 4 GB server at €5.49/mo, but only in Germany and Finland, and Hetzner has been restricting new server creation since June 26, so check the Console first. Since its June 15 repricing, a 4 GB Hetzner in the US costs $37.49/mo against $24/mo for a DigitalOcean 4 GiB Droplet. Hostinger KVM 1 starts at $6.49/mo and renews at $11.99/mo. If you don't want to run a server, managed Cloudways costs more but removes the chores.

Key takeaways

  • Europe, comfortable with SSH: Hetzner CX23, 4 GB RAM and 20 TB of traffic for €5.49/mo excluding VAT, if your account can create one (see the availability check below).
  • Hetzner's June 15 repricing was uneven: shared CX plans rose 31 to 38%, while AMD CPX and dedicated CCX plans in Germany and Finland rose 144 to 173%. Re-run old budgets.
  • US or Asia-Pacific visitors: price DigitalOcean and Vultr first. Both are now cheaper than Hetzner at 4 GB in those regions.
  • First VPS with a panel and a free first-year domain: Hostinger KVM 1 or 2. Renewals run 1.7 to 2.2 times the intro price.
  • No server admin wanted: Cloudways. The premium over a raw 4 GB server is $30 to $47 a month on the prices below.

Check first: can you order a Hetzner server right now?

On October 15, 2026, Hetzner's public Cloud product pages showed a disabled Create button, "This product is currently unavailable", on every plan we opened in the CX, CPX and CCX lines. Hetzner's status page has carried an open notice since June 26, 2026, "Limited availability of cloud instances", which says Hetzner is restricting the creation of new cloud servers for new customers and for some existing customers, chosen at random. We did not try to place an order, so we can't say which sizes or locations your own account can create. Check the Hetzner Console before you plan around any Hetzner price on this page, and keep a second provider on your shortlist.

How this page was checked

Every price is from the vendor's own page, read on October 15, 2026 through a US-egress fetch so you see US storefront prices: Hetzner's June 2026 price-adjustment page and cloud pages, DigitalOcean's Droplet pricing page, Hostinger's VPS page and Cloudways' pricing page. Vultr's figures come from its public plans API. Contabo's page blocked the US fetch, so it was read from outside the US and is flagged where that matters. Nothing was benchmarked for this page. Specs and prices come from the sellers' own sheets.

The publisher does run a production app on a Hetzner Cloud server in Helsinki; its measured response times are on the real hosting performance numbers page. That is one site, so it says little about any provider in general. Only Hostinger and Cloudways pay us a commission. Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Contabo and Vultr links on this page are plain links that earn nothing (disclosure).

Hetzner's June 15, 2026 repricing, before and after

Hetzner states that the adjustment applies to new orders and cloud rescales from June 15, 2026, 8 AM CEST. Orders placed before that date but delivered after it keep the previous price. The page also warns that "certain changes to servers with legacy pricing may trigger a switch to the current pricing", so a rescale of an old server can reprice it.

Source: Hetzner Price Adjustment 15 June 2026, read October 15, 2026 (page last changed July 8, 2026). Monthly prices excluding VAT and excluding the IPv4 address; euro and dollar columns are Hetzner's two price lists, and you are billed in the currency chosen when the account was created. The change column is our arithmetic on the euro prices. Specs come from Hetzner's product pages. For a price including 19% German VAT, Hetzner points to its German price list. The adjustment page lists CX and CAX plans only for Germany and Finland.

The pattern is clear in the table. The cheap shared CX and Arm CAX plans rose about a third. The AMD CPX and dedicated CCX plans in Germany and Finland cost roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times what they did, and the US CPX plans went up more still (+167 to +198%). If a budget was built on a CPX or CCX price from spring, it needs redoing. If it was built on a CX23, it still holds up in Europe.

VPS prices side by side, checked October 15, 2026

The table lines up plans around 4 GB of RAM, plus the next size up where a vendor has no 4 GB plan. All prices are monthly, US view. Euro prices are Hetzner's and Contabo's own currency.

Sources, all read October 15, 2026: Hetzner docs price-adjustment page and traffic documentation; digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets (the Basic, Regular CPU tab); Vultr plans API; hostinger.com/vps-hosting (US view); cloudways.com/en/pricing.php (default view); contabo.com/en/vps (read from outside the US). Contabo's page showed €4.40 as the headline price and €5.50 on the same card, and the page text doesn't say which is the VAT-inclusive figure, so confirm at checkout. Hostinger's cards say the renewal price applies "for 2 years" and do not state the intro term length.

Three things stand out. A 4 GB server in Europe costs roughly a quarter as much on Hetzner as on DigitalOcean. Outside Europe that gap closes or reverses. And the headline price tells you little about month 25: Hostinger's renewals are 1.85 times (KVM 1), 1.67 times (KVM 2), 2.23 times (KVM 4) and 1.92 times (KVM 8) the intro price, while Hetzner and DigitalOcean charge the same rate every month.

Backups are priced differently too. Hetzner's backups cost 20% of the server price and keep seven slots, DigitalOcean charges 20% for weekly or 30% for daily backups and $0.06 per GB a month for snapshots, and Hostinger's VPS page lists free weekly backups and manual snapshots.

Which VPS for which job

Job Pick Why Watch for
Side project or app, European or UK visitors Hetzner CX23 (or CAX11 if your stack builds for Arm) 4 GB and 20 TB for €5.49 is the lowest price per GB of RAM in the table. EU locations are Falkenstein, Nuremberg and Helsinki only. Add €0.50 for IPv4.
US-only visitors, 4 GB server DigitalOcean 4 GiB or Vultr 2 vCPU/4 GB $24 and $20 against $37.49 for Hetzner's US CPX21 after the repricing. Hetzner wins again once outbound traffic passes about 6 TB a month. The Hetzner vs DigitalOcean guide shows the math.
Heavy downloads, media or backups served from the server Hetzner in Germany or Finland At least 20 TB included on every EU plan, then €1.00 per extra TB. The US and Singapore allowances are 1 to 5 TB and 0.5 to 5 TB.
Visitors in India, Australia, South America or Japan Vultr or DigitalOcean Vultr's API lists 33 regions including Tokyo, Sydney, São Paulo and Bangalore. DigitalOcean has Bangalore, Sydney, Singapore and Toronto. Hetzner's only Asia-Pacific location is Singapore.
First VPS, one bill for server and domain Hostinger KVM 1 or KVM 2 Web terminal, weekly backups and a free first-year domain on the VPS page. Renewal is 1.7 to 2.2 times the intro price. Buy the term you actually need.
WordPress or WooCommerce without server upkeep Managed hosting such as Cloudways Updates, hardening and backups handled for you; free migration listed on the pricing page. $54 for 4 GB against $24 raw at DigitalOcean. See the rule of thumb below.
Build servers, scrapers or batch jobs where raw cores matter Contabo Cloud VPS 4 4 vCPU and 8 GB at the lowest headline price in the table. Fair-use traffic with possible throttling, and no renewal price on the page. Performance wasn't measured here. See Contabo vs Hetzner.
Windows apps or RDP Covered separately Licensing changes the price, so the Linux table above doesn't apply. See Windows VPS.
Compliance-driven or hyperscaler-bound workloads Covered separately Egress and managed-service pricing work very differently there. See Hetzner vs Azure.

Managed (Cloudways) or a raw VPS?

Cloudways sells a managed layer on top of servers from DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud (its pricing page lists those five). Hetzner isn't one of them. On the pricing page's DigitalOcean Premium tier, a 4 GB server is $54 a month and the 1 GB entry plan is $14 (Cloudways advertises plans "from $11" on its cheaper Standard tier). A 4 GB DigitalOcean Droplet is $24 and a Hetzner CX23 is about $7.09 with IPv4 on a USD account, when it can be ordered. The gap is $30 against DigitalOcean and about $47 against Hetzner.

Here is the rule of thumb. Estimate the hours a month you would spend on server chores: OS and PHP updates, restoring a broken site, fixing a full disk, checking backups. Multiply by what an hour of your time is worth. If that number is above the gap, pay for managed. At $30 an hour, about one hour a month already covers the $30 gap to DigitalOcean, and roughly one and a half hours covers the Hetzner gap. That calculation is ours and ignores the cost of an outage, which tilts further toward managed if the site earns money.

Pick the raw VPS when the stack isn't WordPress or PHP, when you run several sites on one server so the management fee is spread thinly, or when you want root access to anything you like. Pick managed when there's one WordPress or WooCommerce site and nobody who'd fix it at 2 a.m. Cloudways offers a 3-day free trial and free migration per its pricing page. Our Cloudways coupon page tracks the current promotion, and Cloudways alternatives covers the other managed options.

Your first 30 minutes on a new VPS

A new server answers to the whole internet within minutes of being created. These four steps close the common gaps. The exact commands depend on your operating system and provider, so each step points to official documentation instead of repeating them here.

  1. Create a non-root user and switch to SSH keys. Make a user with sudo rights, add your public key to it, and log in as that user from a second terminal. Only after that works, disable root login and password login in the SSH configuration. Skipping the second-terminal check is how people lock themselves out. See DigitalOcean's Initial Server Setup with Ubuntu or Hetzner's initial setup tutorial.
  2. Close every port you don't use. Allow SSH, and ports 80 and 443 if the server hosts a website, and drop everything else. Hetzner's cloud page says its stateful firewalls carry no extra cost, and they attach to servers from the console (Hetzner Firewalls). The DigitalOcean tutorial above also covers a host firewall.
  3. Turn on automatic security updates. Unpatched packages are the usual way small servers get compromised. Ubuntu documents the setup under automatic updates.
  4. Take a snapshot, then enable backups. Snapshot once the server is configured so you have a known-good point to roll back to. Then turn on scheduled backups; the prices are in the section above. Hetzner explains the difference in its backups and snapshots docs.

If the server is for WordPress, Hetzner lists WordPress among its one-click apps, and the other path is installing the web server, PHP and database yourself. Either way, patching PHP, the database and WordPress then belongs to you. That upkeep is the work the managed option above takes off your plate.

Head-to-head and specialist guides

Skip a VPS if

  • You run one WordPress or brochure site and don't want maintenance. Shared or managed WordPress hosting costs less time; see best WordPress hosting.
  • You need compliance certifications such as SOC 2 or HIPAA. Check each provider's own compliance pages before you commit; none of the prices above buy that.
  • You can't tolerate downtime from one server. A single VPS is a single machine, and a multi-server setup is a different budget.
  • The plan costs under $3 a month. Offers at that price were not evaluated for this page.

VPS hosting FAQ

What is the cheapest VPS in 2026?

By sticker price among plans with 4 GB of RAM or more, Contabo's Cloud VPS 4 shows a headline of €4.40/mo for the first 24 months (4 vCPU, 8 GB, fair-use unlimited traffic). Hetzner's CX23 is €5.49/mo in Germany and Finland, and Hostinger's KVM 1 is $6.49/mo for its intro term. Those aren't equal deals: Contabo doesn't state a renewal price on the page, Hostinger renews at $11.99/mo, and Hetzner has no intro price at all. Checked October 15, 2026.

Did Hetzner raise its cloud prices in 2026?

Yes. Hetzner's price adjustment took effect on June 15, 2026 for new orders and cloud rescales. The CX23 went from €3.99 to €5.49 a month (+38%), the AMD CPX22 from €7.99 to €19.49, and the dedicated-vCPU CCX13 from €15.99 to €42.99, all excluding VAT, per docs.hetzner.com.

Is Hetzner still cheaper than DigitalOcean?

In Germany and Finland, yes: a 4 GB CX23 is $6.49/mo against $24/mo for DigitalOcean's 4 GiB Droplet. In Ashburn or Hillsboro, a 4 GB Hetzner CPX21 is $37.49/mo, so DigitalOcean is cheaper until your traffic gets large. The Hetzner vs DigitalOcean guide works through the egress math.

Does Cloudways run on Hetzner?

No. Cloudways' pricing page lists DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud as the underlying providers. Hetzner isn't on that list, so a Hetzner server needs a self-managed setup or a third-party control panel.

Should I use a VPS or managed hosting for WordPress?

Use a VPS when you want to run more than WordPress, such as Node, Docker or a database you control, and you're willing to patch the server. Use managed hosting when the server is a chore you'd rather pay to avoid. On the prices checked here, Cloudways' 4 GB plan costs $54/mo against $24/mo for a DigitalOcean Droplet of the same size.

How much does a Hostinger VPS cost after the first term?

Hostinger's VPS page, checked October 15, 2026, shows KVM 1 at $6.49/mo renewing at $11.99/mo, KVM 2 at $8.99/mo renewing at $14.99/mo, KVM 4 at $12.99/mo renewing at $28.99/mo, and KVM 8 at $25.99/mo renewing at $49.99/mo. All plans are paid upfront. The page text doesn't state how long the intro term is, so confirm it at checkout.

Bottom line

In Germany or Finland, Hetzner's CX23 at €5.49 is the cheapest sensible 4 GB server in the table, even after the June repricing. Outside Europe, price DigitalOcean and Vultr first. For a first VPS that bundles a domain and a panel, Hostinger KVM 1 or 2 are reasonable starting points as long as you budget for the renewal. Check Hostinger's VPS plans and read the renewal price before you pay.
